Fence Chewing
Hi
I am working at a summer camp and I am in charge of the horses. I have two horses that chew on the fence. One has a collar that is supposedly to keep him from chewing but it doesn't work. Do you have any suggestions for how to cure a horse of this problem? I would appreciate it.
Thanks, Kimberly
Hi Kimberly,
'Cribbing' as this is called, is a nasty stable vice. Other horses who are not cribbers will learn the behavior from the one who is cribbing. There is no cure. A cribbing collar to be effective has to be put on very tight. As horses eat with their necks stretched way down to the ground, the horse will still be able to eat and drink water. But when his head is up, he will not be able to 'crib.' The collar will look very tight when the horse's head is up. A novice would think the collar is too tight. That is probably the reason the collar is not working. It is too lose on his throat. Good Luck.
Sincerely, Franklin
